Adventure-going travelers are often looking to Extreme New Zealand for the wide variety of extreme sports associated with the islands.

New Zealand is the beautiful home of the blockbuster movie The Lord of the Rings.

Many of the extreme sports involve the South Island of New Zealand, where mountains, glaciers and a rustic environment make for the perfect extreme vacation.

There are many bicycling tours of New Zealand’s southwestern coast.
Cyclists can fly over to the west coast from Christchurch on the South Island and begin a southward, rigorous ride toward Queensland or even further south. The area is very rugged with mountains, rivers and bridges to cross and the cyclist can bike over 300 miles along the two lane highway.

Mountain biking trails are also available for those interested in even more extreme bicycling. Many tours offer a touring car for snacks, lunches and for those too tired to traverse New Zealand’s jagged mountains.

Extreme bungee jumping

There are bungee jumping opportunities on both the North and South Islands.
On the North Island, jumpers can jump a water touch bungee jump in the Taupo area in the Waikato River Valley, just upstream from the Huka falls. Jumpers jump into aqua-colored waters and actually touch the water at its lowest point.

Near Queenstown are numerous bungee jumping sites, including the Kawarau Bridge 43 meter jump (picture), the Nevis Highwire jump which boasts a 134 meter jump toward the pristine waters of a rushing river and the Ledge, an urban bungee jumping site within the confines of Queensland.

Auckland has its own sites, such as jumping off the Harbor Bridge into the nearby river.

Cave Abseiling and Blackwater rafting

Adventurers and fun seekers can try Cave Abseiling and blackwater rafting, which is rafting streams and rivers inside caves.
Visitors can go tubing or kayaking on the rivers and explore the caves as well.

Tours are available with adventure guides that can take you into caves such as the TuMu TuMu cave area with a four hour rafting trip of which 2 hours are actually underground.

Another popular spot is the Haggas Honking Holes, an adventure that offers rafting, spelunking, rock climbing and hiking. And there’s always Rambo rafting for those interested in some more adventurous rafting.
